Lot 1/45
The story begins. First, I will tell you how the story ends. The Indian is murdered by Wally Hope. The murder happens in the tiny house of the tiny economist.
Lot 2/45
Introducing The Indian. The Indian is in the center of the landscape. And when he moves, the center of the landscape moves with him. Soon he will be murdered by Wally Hope.
Lot 3/45
Introducing Wally Hope. Wally Hope is a filthy animal. It has a bloody mouth, seven tiny brains, and one black heart. Wally Hope is constantly reproducing, multiplying and dividing. The dog faced children of Wally Hope are born screaming and barking. The caves in which they live smell of burnt electronics and dried blood. Wally Hope has a third arm that grows out of its chest. In the hand of the third arm is a movie camera. Wally Hope films everything from every angle all the time. Wally Hope kills everything from every angle all the time. Wally Hope will kill the Indian but he will not kill the tiny economist.
Lot 4/45
Introducing the tiny economist. The tiny economist is locked in his tiny house. He spends his days sitting at his tiny desk thinking about the economy. The tiny economist says to himself: The language of economics has come to dominate all aspects of social life. The tiny economist has no social life. The tiny economist is very sad and confused.
Lot 5/45
Because Wally Hope films everything from every angle all the time, the murder of The Indian is well documented. That is why I am able to tell this story; I have seen the documentation. Later in this story I will describe the murder. It is extremely bloody and extremely violent.
Lot 6/45
The story begins. It is raining on the landscape. Tap tap tap.
Lot 7/45
Tap tap tap.
Lot 8/45
The Indian moves west, the center of the landscape moves with him.
Lot 9/45
The Indian is wet from the rain. He has been walking in circles for days. The center of the landscape is always moving with him.
Lot 10/45
At this point in the story the tiny economist knows nothing about The Indian or the murder that will soon take place in his house. All he knows about is the economy. He says to himself, The fusion of culture and economics means that there are no values beyond the market. The tiny economist is very sad and lonely.
Lot 11/45
Wally Hope is on the edge of the landscape. Wally Hope smells the wind and howls. Wally Hope divides and moves toward the center of the landscape from every direction. Filming everything. Wally Hope lifts its tail and sprays shit on its own feet. Wally Hope will soon murder The Indian.
Lot 12/45
The tiny economist thinks there is no real opposition between culture and commerce.
Lot 13/45
Rain. The Indian is wet and he wants to be dry. That is simple. He has been walking in circles for days. The center of the landscape always moving with him.
Lot 14/45
Wally Hope chews its tails. It tears off its ears. It swallows its tongues. It moves towards the center of the landscape. Soon it will murder the Indian. It will very bloody and violent.
Lot 15/45
Before Wally Hope kills The Indian, I would like to describe Belgium, Wisconsin. Belgium, Wisconsin is a village in the middle of America. It is a village of Belgian immigrants. These immigrants have built a museum in the center of the village. The museum is made entirely of mud. And whenever it rains, the museum begins to fall apart. After the rain, the citizens of Belgium, Wisconsin work to put the museum back together. If you ask me, Belgium Wisconsin is as close to utopia as one can get.
Lot 16/45
The tiny economist will soon buy the village of Belgium, Wisconsin. Now I will describe the murder. Hallelujah.
Lot 17/45
It is raining on the landscape, tap tap tap.
Lot 18/45
Tap tap tap.
Lot 19/45
The Indian and the center of the landscape have arrived at the house of the tiny economist. The Indian enters the house.
Lot 20/45
Wally Hope is half way to the center of the landscape. Wally Hope moves like a shrinking radius. Rushing toward The Indian from all directions. Murder Murder Murder. Hallelujah.
Lot 21/45
Before I describe the violent death of The Indian I would like to describe Belgium, Wisconsin. In Belgium, Wisconsin there is an old bison. The old bison emigrated from Wallonia to the U.S. along with many other animals. In the winter, when it is deathly cold, the citizens of Belgium, Wisconsin place the bison in the museum so it can stay warm. If you ask me, Belgium, Wisconsin is as close to utopia as one can get.
Lot 22/45
The tiny economist will soon buy the town of Belgium, Wisconsin. Now I will describe the murder.
Lot 23/45
Wally Hope can see the house of the tiny economist. The time for murder has come. All of this is filmed. All of this is documented. Murder murder murder. Hallelujah.
Lot 24/45
Before I describe the violent murder of the Indian I would like to describe Belgium, Wisconsin. The citizens of Belgium, Wisconsin have installed bowling allies all over the village. In the streets, in the gardens, in the offices, in the museums, on the beach. Everywhere. If you want to go bowling, Belgium, Wisconsin is the place to be. If you ask me, Belgium, Wisconsin is as close to utopia as one can get.
Lot 25/45
The tiny economist will soon buy the town of Belgium, Wisconsin. Now I will describe the murder.

Lot 26/45
Wally Hope enters the house through the windows and the doors. Wally Hope enters the house through the chimney. Wally Hope enters the house through the toilet, through the floor, through a crack in the wall.
Lot 27/45
Like any skilled hunter, Wally Hope first attacks the neck. His jaws bite and his teeth sink deep into the dark Indian flesh. Blood flows into the mouth of Wally Hope. The murder has begun. Hallelujah.
Lot 28/45
Hallelujah.
Lot 29/45
Wally Hope bites the face of the Indian. It bites off the nose and bites off part of an ear. The blood is thick and dark and red.
Lot 30/45
Blood blood blood.
Lot 31/45
Murder murder murder.
Lot 32/45
Hallelujah.
Lot 33/45
The Indian is still breathing, but just barely. His throat is full of holes.
Lot 34/45
Wally Hope continues. This time at the ribcage. Tearing out bones and meat. Spitting pieces of The Indian on the floor.
Lot 35/45
I have seen the documentation of this murder. And what happens next is interesting and somehow not surprising. Wally Hope stops killing and gives The Indian a chance to run.
Lot 36/45
The Indian does not run. He stands still. Stupid. Amazed that he is being torn to pieces.
Lot 37/45
Wally Hope continues. It tears off the small pieces of meat from The Indian’s feet and legs. Wally Hope bites off a finger. And then he goes for the eyeballs.
Lot 38/45
At this point in the documentation Wally Hope seems to lose interest in killing The Indian. Despite the lack of interest however, Wally Hope continues. Wally Hope tears off a leg.
Lot 39/45
Wally Hope tears off an arm.
Lot 40/45
The Indian is dead. The center of the landscape is gone.
Lot 41/45
Hallelujah. The rain stops and then... it starts raining again. Hallelujah.
Lot 42/45
The rest of the story is obvious. Now that The Indian is dead, Wally Hope and the tiny economist can work together. Wally Hope will provide the unedited footage of the murder and the tiny economist will finance the editing, the promotion and the distribution.
Lot 43/45
The Crying of Potential Estate - a film of murder, money and multiplicity was screened in Cannes as well as Sundance. The reviews were generally poor.
Lot 44/45
The tiny economist, however managed to invest wisely, and with the money he earned from The Crying of Potential Estate, he was able to buy Belgium, Wisconsin, the closest thing to utopia I have ever seen.
Lot 45/45
The end.

Brief Synopsis : The Disappointment : Or, The Force of Credulity is a documentary/musical/fairytale by media artist Brian Springer that explores the legacy of 19th century U.S. anarchism, treasure hunting and spiritualist folk lore through the story of the Springer family’s decades-long search for buried Spanish treasure in the caves of Missouri. The video project grounds the family’s personal history of treasure-hunting into an expanded social/post-colonial context by exploring the repressed histories of a series of atrocities as they reappear transfigured, displaced and disguised in contemporary notions of "discovery." The Disappointment places pressure not just on notions of documentary truth but also on the contested line between legitimated and non-legitimated ’popular’ knowledges and beliefs.
